Updated Car Tinting Rules for Vehicles Entering Singapore
Window tinting is a popular choice for car owners looking to reduce heat inside their vehicles, but it's important to stay informed about the relevant regulations, especially if you're frequently driving into Singapore. Before you tint your car, it's essential to understand the rules that apply when bringing a vehicle into Singapore with tinted windows.

If you’re planning to drive to Singapore or regularly cross the border with tinted windows, be aware of the recent changes to car tinting regulations. These updates, which came into effect on December 1, 2023, are as follows:
- Non-reflective Tinting: All window tinting must be non-reflective.
- Front windscreen, driver’s, and co-driver’s side windows: These windows must allow at least 70% Visible Light Transmission (VLT).
- Rear windows and rear windscreen: These windows must allow at least 25% VLT.
What is Visible Light Transmission (VLT)?
Visible Light Transmission (VLT) refers to the percentage of light that can pass through a car’s windows. The percentage of VLT indicates how much light is allowed into the vehicle. For example, if a window has a 70% VLT, it means 70% of the light is allowed to pass through, blocking 30%. A lower VLT percentage corresponds to a darker tint, which blocks more light and UV rays, making the interior of the car appear darker.
When adding aftermarket tinting, don’t forget to account for any factory-installed tint that may already be on your vehicle. If you’re unsure of your windows’ VLT rating, you can have a professional measure it, or alternatively, purchase a VLT meter to check the levels yourself.
